Join a costumed guide and uncover the rich and fascinating history of Oxford, its castle, and prison. Clamber up Saxon St. George’s Tower, one of the oldest buildings in Oxford, and enjoy panoramic views over the historic city.

Then, descend into the atmospheric 900-year-old crypt, the only surviving remains of St. George’s Chapel. You’ll also explore the Debtors’ Tower, Prison D-Wing, and the mound of the 11th-century Motte-and-Bailey castle.

Must Know

  • Kids 0-4 cannot access St. George’s Tower

Good to Know

  • Luggage is not allowed on the tour. Lockers are available in the gift shop
  • Prams and pushchairs that do not fit through the doors must be left at the reception where they will be looked after by the staff
  • Pets are not allowed, with the exception of registered assistance dogs
  • No parking available on-site. Parking can be found at Oxpens, Worcester Street, and Gloucester Green – all a short walking distance from Oxford Castle and Prison

  • Kids 0-4 are free; pick up a free ticket for them on-site
  • Tours are in English only. Translation sheets are available in French, German, Italian, and Spanish

On-site usage

  • Show your smartphone ticket at the admissions desk. Please make sure to arrive 10 minutes before your booked timeslot
  • During busy periods, you may have to wait a short while until the next tour is available
  • After the one-hour tour, your tour guide will tell you where you can explore at your own leisure

  • Tickets include access to the Mound. However, the Mound may be closed in wet weather or unsafe conditions
  • Tours may vary according to the season and special events
